CPR Tips

  1. CALL 911
    • Immediately call 911 or direct someone else to call.
  2. ATTEMPT TO WAKE THE VICTIM
  3. PUMP ON THE CHEST – CHEST COMPRESSIONS
    • Patient is NOT BREATHING - put the heel of your hand between the nipples in the center of the chest.
    • Place your other hand on top of the first interlocking fingers.
    • Push down about 2 inches at a rate of 100/minute.
    • If not trained in CPR, continue chest compressions until help arrives or the victim wakes up.
  4. AED (Automated external defibrillator)
    • Continue CPR until it can be attached to the victim.
    • If witnessed the victim collapse – put AED on victim right away
  5. if trained in CPR: Begin Rescue Breathing
    • After 30 chest compressions, open the airway using the head-tilt, chin-lift.
    • Pinch the victim’s nostrils closed and make a seal over the victim’s mouth.
    • Give the victim a breath - the chest will rise and fall*.
    • Give the victim a second breath – the chest will rise and fall.

*If the chest does not rise on the breath, then reposition the head and attempt another breath.

  1. Give 30 chest compressions
  2. Give 2 rescue breaths
  3. Repeat steps 6 & 7 for 2 minutes
  4. After 2 minutes, check victim for breathing.
    • If not breathing – continue CPR starting with chest compressions.
  5. Repeat steps 1 – 5 until help arrives or the victim wakes up.
